sentrigologoSentrigo, an Israel-based database security software company, announced last week that it has become the sole distributor of Repscan by Red-Database-Security, “the only 360-degree database vulnerability assessment and security scanning software available for Oracle databases.”

The move helps Sentrigo solidify its hold on the database security market by complementing its Hedgehog database activity monitoring software with software that monitors and identifies Oracle database weaknesses and vulnerablities. In specific, Repscan can “detect insecure PL/SQL code and forensic traces; database modifications; insecure system configuration settings; and weak, shared and default passwords.”

Some main Repscan features include:

  • Report-driven penetration testing
  • Altered data detection (privileged and user tables)
  • Forensic trace discovery from common security and hacker tools
  • Automatic conversion of the weaknesses found by Repscan into protection rules and policies in the Sentrigo Hedgehog Database Security Suite

According to Sentrigo’s website, Hedgehog Enterprise

“is for organizations that require breach prevention, end-user identification, virtual patching, integration with your existing security infrastructure, IT governance and operate with enterprise-wide database deployment.”

The software also

“provides full visibility into all database activity including local privileged access, protects the database in real-time with actionable alerts and prevention capabilities, and allows enterprises to enforce security policy and comply with regulatory requirements, such as PCI DSS, Sarbanes-Oxley, SAS 70 and HIPAA.”

As an aside, Oracle is currently in talks to purchase Sun Microsystems for over $7 billion and enter the hardware market.

SNI-2.JPGThe week of October 12th was surprisingly busy in Israel. Talk of how Israeli universities and colleges might not open this year due to funding continued, while a serious solution to the recent “brain drain” problem was proposed. Though darker days are still ahead for the U.S. and global economies and VCs and others are warning startups and entrepreneurs that they will have to do more with less, if any, funding, money is still out there for strong companies, such as Wix.com and MyThings.com. This past week saw PLYmedia named Israel’s most promising Internet start-up of 2008 by Microsoft, and HP unveil plans for startup incubation. The Internet was abuzz with Fring making unlocked iPhones now VoIP accessible and EyeBlaster‘s and Dapper’s joining to do the mash… up. Oh yeah, and for those who missed my previous post, IBM continued its data storage solutions providers shopping spree, with its purchase of Diligent Technologies for an estimated $200 million. Sentrigo_logo.pngEarlier this week, Sentrigo, Inc., an enterprise database security software provider, announced the release of Hedgehog 2.0.

According to the news release, the updates to Hedgehog 2.0 now allow Microsoft SQL Server users to

enjoy the same
level of security provided by Sentrigos
Hedgehog to Oracle database usersdefending
against insider breaches, external attacks and vulnerability exploits.

Regular followers of ITGumbo’s parent website, ebizQ.net, should be familiar with Sentrigo from a podcast that ebizQ’s Security Editor, Peter Schooff did with Sentrigo Vice President of Marketing, Rani Osnat, last summer. In it, the two discuss virtual patching and granularity (Hedgehog’s main differentiation points) and what gives it its flexibility to work within a dynamic, shared system (the database) without requiring downtime or preventing other work, unrelated to the vulnerability, from continuing.

The company’s innovativeness in an area of growing concern for database managers hasn’t only caught the attention of ebizQ though. Data security-related websites and blogs throughout the Web have covered the company and its active blogger, CTO and co-founder, Slavik Markovich.

Anyone who wants to get an idea of the data security field, Sentrigo, and Markovich’s role in the company’s success, should check out his blog, “Musings on Database Security.” IT professionals serious about security and preventing database breaches, should consider Hedgehog 2.0 as a possible software solution. There are two main versions of Hedgehog: Hedgehog Enterprise and Hedgehog Standard. Hedgehog Standard can be downloaded for free via Sentrigo’s website.
