iPhone and 10 Israel-related headlines from the week of June 14, 2009

During the week of June 14, 2009, Israel was named a developed market which will be effective in 2010 and its economy was hit less hard due to the high tech industry. While the protests, demonstrations and online activity heated up in Iran, Israel’s Fring announced that its software was being used by several protesters and helping their cause. Inside Israel, the biggest news was that the iPhone from Apple will finally be coming to Israel officially. For these stories and the rest of this week’s 10 Israel-related headlines check below.

Microsoft and OEM’s to gain ground using N-Trig technology while Jobs is on medical leave
The breaking news that Steve Jobs of Apple is taking a medical leave of absence for several months makes the news from earlier this week of Microsoft investing in Israel- and Texas-based N-Trig gets even more interesting.
Earlier this week, N-Trig, the sole provider of DuoSense™ technology which combines pen, touch and multi-touch into one device, announced it successfully raised $24 million in its latest round of funding for the purpose of funding ongoing strategic partnerships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop multi-touch notebooks that will reach a wider market.
Investors in the round included Canaan Partners, Evergreen Venture Partners, Aurum Ventures and Challenger Ltd. In addition to these venture capital firms, none other than Microsoft Corp. also invested. The investment comes as part of its efforts to build more pen and touch applications into its next-generation Windows 7 operating system and as part of its racing Apple to multi-touch.
To date, N-Trig’s DuoSense Technology is already used in Dell’s Latitude XT and Hewlett-Packard’s TouchSmart x2 and the company announced last week with CyberLink Corporation that they are developing multi-touch-enabled solutions for PCs worldwide together to increase that amount. Though it’s unlikely, it will be interesting if Apple’s plans will be in any way hindered while Jobs is away.
N-Trig was founded by Dr. Meir Morag in 1999 after he previously co-founded e-Sim. The company is lead by CEO Amihai Ben-David and has raised some raised some $73 million while growing to over 100 employees over the years. Last year, “Globes” rated N-trig as one of Israel’s most promising start-up companies.

Breaking News: Aternity and Ness Technologies Form Strategic Partnership

Israel Innovation 2.0 has received word that Aternity Inc. and Ness Technologies have formed a partnership in which Ness Technologies, a global provider of end-to-end IT services and
solutions, will sell, implement, train and support the Aternity Frontline Performance Intelligence (FPI) Platform in Israel.
In the news release announcing this, Shahar Efal, President of Ness Israel, explains,
“Enterprise-class organizations realize that they need to monitor and measure application performance, usage, and usability not just from the data center perspective, but from the end user perspective. Aternity delivers a unique and extremely effective approach with its Frontline Performance Intelligence platform which represents the next-generation of application performance management technology. We are committed to the successful deployment and implementation of Aternity as the ubiquitous platform for delivering end-to-end visibility into real end user experience for our clients.”
This news follows Aternity’s two-fold announcement back in June of its first set of packaged Frontline Performance Intelligence (FPI) solutions tailored for specific enterprise applications and the launch of its worldwide Partner Program.
In an Israel Innovation 2.0 interview with Aternity at the time, CEO Trevor Matz stated that
“Aternity’s platform uniquely monitors the end-user experience in real time by analyzing, aggregating and correlating desktop performance, application performance and user productivity to help determine and resolve in less time the root cause of any problems. Using the FPI Platform, companies can become proactive in capacity planning, application licensing optimization, and desktop virtualization and orchestration.”
While this partnership will allow Aternity to enter into a new market and help improve the performance of Israeli companies in the process, it can also give Ness – which is “facing intense competition form large players in the IT industry” – the edge it needs.
