I received an email yesterday about registering for the 2007 DemoGermany conference in Munich next month. This is a major annual conference that features a select number of tech companies’ innovative products and considers itself “The Launchpad for Emerging Technology”. Of the main demonstrators this year, two are Israeli companies. One is the Yakum-based company, WorkLight (formerly known as Serendipity Technologies), that lets workers “increase productivity by defining their own enterprise application experience,” and the other is the Beit Shemesh-based company that I mentioned in my last post, Vringo, Inc. Vringo is the company to watch in the evolution of sharing video ringtones.
According to the FAQs section on the website, Vringo provides mobile users who are buddies in the Vringo community the chance to share video clips with each other by choosing “what video ringtone plays on your buddies’ handset when you call them.” The service is free, but getting licsensed video content to share has a small fee.
Vringo was founded by seasoned Israeli venture capitalist and entrepreneur, Jonathan Medved in 2005 who, according to an article by Business Week Online reporter, Neal Sandler, came up with the idea a few years ago when he was listening to an audio ad for Hertz Rent-A-Car while on hold with the company and realized that it might be more effective for Hertz and other companies to serve up images or videos of their products instead. Although Vringo’s current service is a little different with a focus on building a community of users who can share video clips only if they are buddies, the advertising industry can post video ads on the site, which still gives a chance for video ads to be found and spread virally when Vringo users come across enticing enough video ads that inspire them to want to buy and share such videos with other buddies.
With 18 million and 22 million mobile Internet users in the United Kingdom and United States, respectively, and the increasing popularity of the Apple iPhone, Vringo’s innovative technology can set a revolutionizing standard in the mobile advertising industry in the next few months and will be especially interesting to follow after the DemoGermany conference in October.
